Beauty and the Blog

Well, I've gone and done it. I've started a blog. I think I just have too much to say than can be contained in my laughable fifteen minute limit on youtube. And youtube is probably where you met me. I am the creator of Lisa Freemont Street and no, my name isn't Lisa Freemont. It's Ashley. The channel name is actually a blend of two of my biggest inspirations: Grace Kelly and Vintage Las Vegas. For those of you who are fellow Hitchcock fans, you probably remember Grace's character in Rear Window-Lisa Fremont. Her grace and poise were beautifully portrayed in that film (along w/ the phenomenal Edith Head fashions she wore) but she also had a spunky, adventurous side that I loved. On the other hand, I also have a pension for glitz and kitsch, so I had to throw a little 'Fremont Street' into the mix. Yes, I'm aware of the difference in spelling...but when you type in 'Freemont Street' on google, just WHO comes up? See? There's a method to my madness!

Anyway, I've opted to start a beauty blog dedicated to detailed product reviews, fashion opinions, and retro styling. This spot will house lots of odd ramblings about the era I love best, a few movie reviews, and maybe a couple of words about the classic ladies of cinema that have always held a special place in my heart. So if there is a product or movie you'd like to see reviewed, feel free to shoot me a message.

A brief word about me: I am a forty-year-old lady who feels much younger, probably due to the fact that my four crazy kids keep me very active. I value fitness and routine as well as fashion. My husband and I have been together since 1995, when we married, and things are going well on the homefront. I grew up in a family that adores classic film and music. Music has always been an outlet (not creatively...we're academics!)in the lives of myself and my husband. So music plays a major part in my videos, as you probably know. We live in Memphis Tennessee, only a few blocks from Sun Studios and we value the history and culture in our neighborhood greatly. I am not a liscensed beautician and am entirely self taught. But I feel that anyone can accomplish something in a field they are passionate about. So that's me!

Here's to elegant expressions and cosmetic conversation!

Hi Ashley,

I love what you have created here. I was just watching one of your videos and I think they are really artistic and done with such panache.

Dear Lisa: Please check out the Johnny Lavoy "Amy Winehouse" hairdo on Youtube. He uses fake hair with a neutral colored net to get the height at the crown without a lot of teasing. I think you'll like it, and, this guy rocks when it comes to creativity in hairstyles. He's almost as creative as you. It should help with the "joan" looks.

Best wishes. Ivannaretire

I love all you do. I am mid-forties and still rockin' my style. I am more edgy and more made up than anyone else everyday. I cannot help myself. Growing up in rural Australia we had a very narrow TV guide. Classic Tony Curtis pirate movies, Rita Hayworth (my favourite) and all their peers paraded in front of me every weekend. Red, red lips and long flowing hair (if you ignore the bald and primary colour & feathered tail punk phase in the mid 80s!), pencil skirts, arched eyebrows and a strong desire for tailored everything is my signature style. I cook like a demon. I have vintage aprons in my kitchen drawer. You are helping me learn the art of immaculate makeup.

Though I am not involved in this event, I thought you might be interested in an upcoming celebration of rockabilly style in Australia.

Thank you for everything. x

So I couldn't find a recent curler post to put this on easily but really wanted to ask: when I curl my hair in a wet set, it almost takes on too much curl. Despite a vigorous brush out, it springs right back into a tiny curl which is hard to style (using pin curls or large/xl sponge rollers). Do you had guidance on whereto look into styling the curls (modified middy) and getting less springy curls? Many
Many thanks!

I absolutely adore your youtube channel as well as this blog, and you were so kind to respond to my posting on facebook. I've bought the Lauren Rennells books (Vintage hairstyling, and Retro make up). You so inspire me to channel my inner 40's girl. My hair is almost to my waist, so the up do's and pin up curly styles are about all I'm able to do, but they're still fun! I also do Renaissance faires, so, shorter hair, really isn't an option at this time. Maybe when I finally get tired of long hair, i'll cut it into a middy hairstyle.

Here's looking at you kid ;)

Firstly you're like my Yoda of hairstyles and I appreciate all that you do!
One thing that I've noticed though, is I find myself forgetting or re-looking up certain products that you use. It would be sooooo helpful if you had a section at the top of your blog - labeled something like, useful products.
Because I can't remember what your current fave hairspray is (I live in San Antonio, TX and am in humidity overload) so I'm having to fine comb through a plethora of information.
Don't know if anyone else has had to go through this, so I might be alone in this conundrum.

Bottom line, you're a glam patriot for helping us all.
