Drugstore Eyeshadows...

This is just a quick blurb:

I bought this eyeshadow quad from Wal Mart last week since I needed a small neutral selection for everyday use...browns and pinks are my favorites.

Though I am a huge advocate of drugstore cosmetics (and drugstore priced brands, like Coastal Scents), I can't say I am a fan of most drugstore eyeshadows. All brands seem equally chalky and equally weak in pigmentation. This quad was no exception. After two uses it is now banished to the bottom drawer. Not only was the formula very powdery but the colors were almost completeley invisible. Even the dark brown shade comes off as a pale taupe on my lid. It gets a sad 2/10 rating from me.

Incidentally, the only eyeshadow I can unreservedly recommend from drugstores is NYX. The colors are strong and the formulas are silky...MAC comparable quality. However, NYX is only available at Target around here and those are few and far between in my neck o' the woods. So it's back to online shopping for me, when it comes to eyeshadows.

That's all for now...Cheerio!

Do you ever use any Mary Kay products? I have tried their stuff, and I found it was as bad as the "drugstore" stuff for weak pigmentation and didn't wear well. Honestly, the only Mary Kay product I liked was their lipstick. That wore well. However, I havent' tried their stuff in about 15 years or so. They may have improved it...

Actually, I used to be a Mary Kay consultant. I still have a ton of sample sized products from them and though I use it still, I strongly agree. The colors are very muted and provide very little actual pigment. I enjoy using their Onyx duo and the eyesickles cream eyeshadows were decent quality. Everything else (in their color collection) is on par w/ Maybelline, Loreal, etc. That said, I still swear by their skincare and cream foundation, for my dry skin.

For eyeshadows, I will stick w/ Coastal Scents and NYX...maybe splurging every now and then on a MAC or Stila product. ;-)

I've found that certain Maybelline eyeshadows are fabulous while others are so-so. I'm currently using Vanilla(shimmer), Seashell(shimmer), and Nutmeg(matte), and I'm quite pleased. I also used a color called Amethyst(shimmer) on occasion. These colors have a really rich pigmentation (Nutmeg is true to the color in the pan on my lily-white skin), great blendability, and a silky-smooth texture. They're usable both wet and dry, and look fabulous either way.

The only Maybelline colors I've had the issues you mention above are blues and greys-- they just don't look quite right.

I like MAC-- I use the Mineralize foundation and powder along with blush and lipsticl. I like the shadow every now and then, but my favorite department store shadow by far is Estee Lauder with Benefit as a not-even-close second.

I'm loving Everyday Minerals eyeshadow. I have this shade that is absolutely *perfect* and is everything I have been looking for in a shadow. It was a *glee* moment when I first tried it out. :)

Thanks for the EM recommendation, Beverly. I like the idea of mineral eyeshadows...Coastal Scents carries those as well. I'll have to do a little blurb on CS sometime. :)

Loreal shadows in general are a bust although Loreal's HIP line is wonderful. I agree though NYX is the best and coming from Canada I can say it is really hard to get here as well. There is hone store i the town I grew up in so I stock up every time I am there for a visit.

I live MINUTES from a Super Target... they don't carry NYX, but they do have Napoleon Perdis (Australian makeup artist), Pixie, and JK Jemma Kidd. I agree about the L'Oreal Hip Pigments. I also like those cream shadows made by Revlon that come in a little four pan palette thingy.

I got the one for blue eyes, and unless I use a colored base (I like the peach side of the E.L.F. cream eyeshadow duo), I can't really get any color payoff. Luckily, the dark brown matches my eyebrows perfectly, so at least I have a brow color out of the set. These are nice for very casual days too, but not for a dramatic look.
